WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ORGANIC COFFEE...AND WHAT YOU DON"T

What you need to know about organic coffee… and what you don’t.

As your friends at Monkey Cult Coffee plan to release our 1st organic coffee later this week we wanted to educate our customers on what exactly makes a coffee organic and more importantly, is it the right coffee for you.

What is organic coffee?

The term organic coffee refers to a product of sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices. Unlike conventional coffee, it’s cultivated without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Instead, organic coffee growers rely on natural methods to nurture their coffee plants and protect the environment. This approach includes promoting biodiversity, conserving water, and prioritizing soil health. Certified by various organizations, organic coffee offers a more environmentally conscious and potentially tastier choice for coffee lovers. By choosing organic coffee, consumers support farming methods that prioritize both the planet’s health as well as the well-being of the people who grow our beloved morning Cup o’ Joe.

Does organic coffee affect taste?

While taste is subjective and can vary depending on various factors, many people appreciate the distinctive, earth-friendly flavor of organic coffee as a testament to sustainable farming practices. You can say that this is a very polarizing subject and opinions differ quite heavily. Organic coffee has earned a reputation for offering a unique flavor profile. The absence of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers allows the coffee plants to interact more intimately with their natural environment. This often results in a nuanced taste that many coffee connoisseurs find appealing. Organic coffee is frequently associated with a cleaner, more vibrant flavor that highlights the regional characteristics of the beans. The cultivation of organic coffee under shade trees can also impart subtle fruity or floral notes, enhancing the overall sensory experience. Are there any cons to organic coffee?

While organic coffee has its merits, it’s not without drawbacks. One significant downside is the potential for lower yields and increased production costs (as if we haven’t had enough inflation). Organic farming methods can be more labor-intensive and require more land compared to conventional practices. This can lead to higher prices for organic coffee. Additionally, the absence of synthetic chemicals may make organic coffee more susceptible to pests and diseases, potentially impacting crop quality and quantity. Another concern is the lack of a uniform standard for organic certification worldwide, leading to varying quality and authenticity. From our perspective being able to have a consistent flavor profile is a concern for us as we are choosing our 1st organic coffee. Finally, some argue that the taste of organic coffee can be too “earthy” or “wild” for those accustomed to the smoother profiles of conventionally grown beans. Ultimately, while organic coffee aligns with sustainable principles, it’s essential to weigh these cons against its benefits when making a choice. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and this is something that needs to be considered when choosing between organic and non organic.

So what is YOUR decision?

Choosing between organic and non-organic coffee beans is far from a simple decision; it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both options have their merits and drawbacks, making the choice a nuanced one. The decision should hinge on individual values, taste preferences, and budget considerations. Some prefer the cleaner, earthy taste of organic coffee, while others find comfort in the familiarity and affordability of non-organic options. Ultimately, the coffee you choose should align with your priorities and satisfy your palate, making it a matter of personal preference. That being said we here at Monkey Cult Coffee believe that it should be an option which is why we are adding an organic option to our lineup in the next few weeks. We want to make sure that we offer what you want and what you need. Also keep an eye out for our newest artisanal flavor infused creation. #JoinTheCult today!!!
